JESUS IS THE ULTIMATE TRANSFORMER

Spiritual transformation can happen in the blink of an eye, or it can happen after much questioning and meditation until it comes as an aha moment. Regardless of the time involved, it is a wonderful, life-changing event for those who truly seek the Lord.

The transformer

During our childhood on the farm, my twin sister and I often waited for the school bus at the end of our driveway. On many days woodpeckers sat along the electric line near the transformer that transferred power from the main line to the one powering our farm.

Perhaps we can compare the transformer, that transferred (or changed) the amount of power on our line, to that of the Holy Spirit. He is the ultimate spiritual transformer who empowered Jesus’ disciples on the day of Pentecost and who continues to empower Christians.

We often see change, however, at the hands of those who are opposed to Jesus’ teachings. The devil also “transforms himself into an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14) Haven’t we all succumbed to temptations that appeared to be for our own good? In so doing, we have allowed ourselves to be transformed into someone other than the dedicated follower that Jesus would have us be. The result is loss of power in fulfilling His perfect will.

Paul compares the danger of conforming to things of the world to causing ourselves to be changed into Jesus’ likeness. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:1-2)

Rather than allowing ourselves to be molded, or conformed, by the values of the world, we should allow God’s powerful Spirit to transform us through our mind. A mind set on things outside of God will produce a life tossed to and fro by the currents of our culture. Many such currents are almost too strong to resist. Conversely, when we dedicate our minds to His truth, our hearts will be transformed so others will see His power in our words and actions.

Like the electric transformer, our power can be changed from weak and ineffectual to strong enough to draw the people around us who may be hungry for God’s love and salvation.

Lord, thank You for Your transforming power. Renew our minds so we can be powerhouses of Your love and joy and peace. Cause us to remain so strong in Your Word and Spirit that we will not be conformed to the values of the world around us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
