WHAT DO YOU RESOLVE TO DO IN 2019?

New Year’s resolutions have little to show for themselves, if we consider the failures most of us have experienced in trying to keep them. But when we make them prayerfully and depend on the Lord to see us through, the success rate can go through the roof. Let’s count on Him to give us victory.

ETERNAL PERSPECTIVES                  By Sally Bair

Resolved

Have you planned your New Year’s resolutions yet? Resolving to do one new thing may seem overwhelming, so many of us don’t even bother. For business owners, however, taking fiscal inventory is necessary. Not only must we determine what taxes are due so we can give an honest accounting to the government, but we must learn how to better our business and avoid mistakes we’ve made during the past year.

Every new year all of us should consider taking a spiritual accounting, too. In fact, the Bible tells us to “examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified.” (2 Corinthians 13:5-6)

In matters of faith, we can ask ourselves, are we walking according to the Gospel that we profess? Are we applying the standard of the Gospel to our own lives? Are we loving God first and foremost and then others as much as ourselves? Or are we holding back from God? Unwilling to give him every part of us? Not believing His Word?

We all struggle with believing His Word. We can all use more faith. In fact, without faith we cannot please God. But faith requires stepping outside our regular, day-to-day routine. Instead of telling someone “I’ll pray for you,” we can ask if they would like prayer on the spot. We can offer a sick neighbor not only our prayers, but a bowl of soup or an hour of housecleaning.  God wants us to use our hands and feet, our smiles and kind words, our money and time and our prayers. We may be the only Gospel people hear.

God’s Word tells us to “go.” With prayer for His will to be done through us and by the power of His Spirit, we can change the world, meeting needs one at a time.

Before we resolve to make changes in our physical, financial, emotional and relational lives, let’s prayerfully focus on our spiritual one.

Lord, thank You for opportunities to serve You this coming year. Show us day by day Your perfect will for our lives. Give us Your wisdom, strength and power to make a difference for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
