Thanksgiving Prayer

Eternal Perspectives   by Sally Bair

A Prayer of thanks

A belated happy Thanksgiving to you. This day can become a new beginning of continual thanks to God, our Creator, Redeemer and Comforter.

King David’s example of praising and thanking God in all things, through every circumstance, can become ours. “Make a joyful shout to the Lord, all you lands! … Be thankful to Him and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.” (Psalm 100:1, 5)

Lord God, we give you thanks for the snow. Yes, Lord, for the snow and cold that is renewing the earth with Your moisture and clean, crisp air. We thank You for warm hats, mittens, boots and jackets, and for the fuel that keeps our homes toasty warm. Make us mindful of those who do not have such. Guide us as we seek out those who need warmth—the poor, the outcasts, the ill, the depressed, the lonely. Fill us with the desire to be generous and loving.

Lord God, we thank You for our families and friends. Keep them safe, healthy, joyful, and free from evil temptations in all their pursuits. Cause us to be worthy examples of Your love to each of them.

Thank You for good health, good food and good sense. Guide us as we make choices that will keep us in good health and will help those around us to become healthier. We are “to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” (2 Corinthians 2:15) May the fragrance we have in Christ draw others to You.

Lord God, thank You for the freedoms we enjoy in our land. May we never take them for granted and, with Your help, fight for their continuance. Lead us to those who have fewer freedoms and especially to those who need the freedom Christ Jesus offers. “Now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have … everlasting life.” (Romans 6:22) Thank You, Lord, for telling us that if Jesus, Your Son, makes us free, we shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)

Lord God, thank You for inhabiting our praises. As people made in Your image, we know that You feel joy alongside us whenever we honor You with our trust and obedience. May our praise and thanks to You stir our hearts and the hearts and souls of those around us.

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.” (Revelation 7:12)
